Donate to the 2021 RR365 Charity Appeals
Radio Ramadan 365 will be supporting a range of charities this year. In particular, we want to support local groups to deliver vital services to the community.
Amma Birth Companions
We provide volunteer Birth and Postnatal Companions to vulnerable birthing people - currently these are primarily refugees and asylum seekers.
In the year to the end of March 2021, we accepted new referrals for 43 women and continued our support for 13 existing clients. Our volunteers have provided (or will soon provide) continuous, one-to-one support to these women during pregnancy, birth, and postnatally. These women originate from 19 Countries. 38% spoke no English, 17% spoke basic English. 30% had children still residing in their home country and 30% had other children with them in the UK. For 40%, this was their first baby. Half were survivors of trafficking. 68% were new to Glasgow and 67% were in the asylum process. Others’ status varied from refugee to those with no recourse to public funds, a few British Citizens and people soon to enter the asylum process. Almost all of them expressed anxiety and fear around giving birth and many of them were in a crisis situation when we met them. A majority of them were facing the mammoth task of giving birth to their baby entirely alone, with no supportive birth partner. This is where Amma volunteers come in. They are by the side of these women throughout late pregnancy, the whole of the birth and the first few months of new parenthood, providing emotional, physical and practical support as they navigate this incredibly difficult path.
With more than half of our clients speaking either no English or very basic English, a significant amount of our charity's expenditure is on interpreter support. Although we do try to match each client with a volunteer who speaks her native language, this is not always possible so we use a dedicated telephone interpreter service called ClearVoice which covers 200+ languages and is available 24-7-365. We use the ClearVoice service whenever our volunteers make contact with their clients, either face to face or by telephone (on a three-way call). This can be during initial pre-natal support, at medical appointments, during the birth of the baby and whilst providing post-natal support. The NHS has a duty of care to provide an interpreter at appointments and at the birth of the baby, but this does not always happen (feedback gathered from our clients indicated that many of them experienced either no NHS-provided interpreter support, or the support provided was inadequate. We are working on a pilot project in partnership with NHSGGC to try and address this). Again, our volunteers have to use ClearVoice for support in this situation.
We estimate that the cost of accessing this service for 2021-2022 will be around £13,000. We would be incredibly grateful if the staff and listeners of Radio Ramadan would consider helping with a contribution towards this cost.

Parent and Family Coaching Programme 2021
Unity Family Services (UFS) has primarily offered one to one counselling/coaching with couples pre and post marriage and offered marriage counselling as a continuous service. The demand and success of this has been immense over the years. Evolving from this came to light, parenting and the upbringing/rearing of children as Unity Family Services also had queries from parents re their children and advice was sought in many contexts with the importance of how and why we rear and direct our children and have them flourish in the best way possible. From here on UFS decided to put together just a Parent and Family Coaching Programme which would solely address the issue(s) coming from a parenting perspective. Keeping this in light, a specialist Parent Coach was sought to deliver this programme.
The Ark hosts a range of projects to benefit the Muslim community in Glasgow, including Radio Ramadhan, RR365, Podcasting, media and personal development training, the Iqra Book Festival, events for New Muslims, community events including Eid in the Park, poetry nights and much more.
All of this is delivered largely by our dedicated volunteers.
Your continued support will keep these projects afloat and enable us to develop new and exciting initiatives to benefit the community.
